Some time ago, when I was dealing with a heartbreaking family situation over which I had no control, one of the things that helped me get through the misery of it was to spend time outside.
Every day I’d drive to a nearby park. On rainy days I’d sit in my car. When the weather was nice, I’d get out and walk. The sight and smell of the greenery, cadence of my stroll, and harmonious chirping of birds reassured me that I would again have personal peace and order in my life.
What a Positive Difference Nature Makes
Each day I would return home thinking and feeling in ways that increased my ability to not only cope, but to make tough, yet wise, decisions that would benefit me in the long run. From Nature’s embrace came the strength I needed to push through a little more, regardless of how painful the present situation was or what might follow in the future.
I refueled in that park every afternoon, until it was time for me to take one last drive away from it and toward a new city, a new chapter and a new life. When you need clarity, grit, self-compassion and direction, Nature’s got you.

When you feel stress welling up inside–get outside. Even if it’s just to hang out in your back yard or front porch for a while. If you don’t have a favorite outdoor spot, why not go on an adventure to find one? Or several? Nature’s calming effects are everywhere. Go on and let your Mother give you an all-encompassing hug. Unplug for a while. It will strengthen you and reaffirm that, indeed, stability in your life will be restored. You will again thrive. As surely as Winter turns to Spring.
